LCA’s Ross commits to UK baseball

300robbieuk.jpgSaying it would be cool to play college baseball in his hometown, Lexington Christian Academy’s Robbie Ross (shown at left) has commited to the University of Kentucky. Ross, who’s ready to begin his senior year at LCA, is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed pitcher/outfielder. UK also got a recent commitment from Boone County catcher/outfielder Cory Farris, who hit .444 with 45 RBI last spring.

Ross hit .370 and scored 34 runs for LCA last season. As a pitcher, facing some of the best teams in the state, he was 4-5 with a 2.95 ERA. He was considering making visits to Arizona, and some SEC schools, including Georgia and Mississippi State, but he scrapped those plans after commiting to John Cohen’s Cats. “I thought UK was the best for me; I felt right at home,” he said. Ross isn’t sure if he’ll be a pitcher or outfielder in college.

Ross is in Lakeland, Fla., this week for the East Coast Showcase that draws a lot of pro scouts. Ross has “heard through the grapevine” that he’s getting some attention. If he has a big senior season at LCA next spring, he might have the option of turning pro instead of going to college. “If that happens, it happens,” he said. “But right now I’m thinking school.”

Ross and Lexington Catholic pitcher Nick Maronde will go to Joplin, Mo., in a couple weeks to try out for the U.S. Junior National team. If they make the final cut, they’ll head on to Mexico for preliminary tournament play. When Ross gets back to LCA, he’ll step right into soccer.
